DK basics

Death Knight
Lvl 63 atm, so I haven't seen it all yet :)

The DK is a melee class with a lot of aoe effects, most are dot like. The main attacks are strikes and 2 instant range spells.

There's 2 mechanics for  the class that work together. First there's the runes, you have 6 of them, 2 blood, 2 frost and 2 unholy. All of them are on a 10 second cool down and I haven't seen anything that can change that. Most of your spells and abilities have a price in runes, for example Blood Strike costs 1 blood rune. If you use 2 Blood Strikes in a row, it'll take another 7 seconds until you can use a blood rune again (2x Global Cool down = 3 secs).

All the talent trees have a talent that causes some of your runes to become Death runes. These are generic runes that can be used for anything. So in the example above, you could be able to cast another Blood Strike because one frost rune became a death rune.

The second mechanic is runic power. This kinda works like the warriors rage; you start at 0, have a max of 100 and gain runic power through abilities and talents. Untalented, you gain 10 rp (runic power) every time you use a rune. Since you have 6 runes, and the most expensive rune spell uses 3 runes, you can gain 60 rp in 3 secs but then all your runes are on cool down for the next 7 secs. You do not gain rp by hitting or being hit.

So basically how you fight is: you use a couple of spells that use runes, then one or two that use runic power and then back to runes again. All trees have talents that increase your gain of runic power.

The three talent trees are:

Blood. Aimed at solo'ing mostly, lot of health regenerating abilities here. Also has the best runic power generation.
Frost. The tanking tree although it's a low number of tanking talents. Lots of slowing effects and ofc frost damage.
Unholy. The 'dps' tree although it doesn't excel the other trees in dps by a lot. More focus on aoe, diseases and pets.

And in case you were wondering. DK's use the same gear as warriors. Spell power does nothing for DK's, and Strenght is there best friend.

Regarding the CD of runes, they are apparently not on a 10sec CD. From ElitistJerks:

It was always assumed that Runes just had a pure 10 second regen time. This has proven to be false from various tests. The behaviour that has been noted is that after the first set of runes very often runes regen after 8 seconds. The current concensus is the following:

Started a Deathknight this morning, a Human female named Muhjera.

Planning to have her Unholy 2Hander specced in time, talking about it with Stoffer made me think that matches my playstyle and interest the most. This http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jfVMVZZfM0Ixcktcq0fout is the specc Ive concocted. It differs some from the EJ's cooky cutter, but I doubt some of their choices :)

Ofc. it'll be 2010 before she's actually lvl 80 and stuff, but he, a man can dream cant he? ;)

Unholy is a lot of fun (I played the tank version for a long while), you even get to manage two pets :P If I remember correctly, Wandering Plague was worth the talent points, even on single targets, but I am not sure.
